Non Renewable Energy Sources And Wood Pellet Fuel

As you will know, currently our main sources of energy come from fossil fuels. We now also know that fossil fuels are responsible for increased carbon emissions which appear to be responsible for raising the global climate.

While this is a very serious issue that we need to address, there is another downside to fossil fuels in that they are a non renewable source of energy, hence we cannot replace the resources we use which will ultimately mean we will run out. This is not a very responsible thing to do, to leave future generations without a source of energy we have made our entire society dependant on. Therefore we need to use more renewable sources of energy that we can replace. Wood and biomass in general are renewable sources of energy, however its not as simple as that. For instance oak is a brilliant fuel, and technically we can grow another oak tree. The problem is time, the time it takes for a new oak tree to grow back compared to the time it takes to use the oak tree. Therefore when talking about renewable energy and biomass and wood we need to use resources that can grow back within the time it takes us to consume them. Please see the video below. Generally the best resources that are renewable and grow back quickly enough are agricultural wastes and energy crops, however some are better than others. For example hemp probably is our best option, it can produce food and fuel and has only a 3 month growing cycle. However other good examples are using the stalks and cobs from corn production and the straw from wheat and barley. To process these materials into a fuel, the most practical option is pellets. Pellets can then be burnt in advanced pellet stoves.
