Using Renewable Energy Resources In The Pellet Press In society we need to start taking energy more seriously, in terms of where it comes from, how much we use, can we replace it and its impact on the environment. Also using the pellet press. We are slowly now moving away from almost a complete dependence on fossil fuels on to more renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and biomass. Biomass is materials like wood and agricultural wastes, much of this material still goes to landfill, so can be very cheap to acquire. However biomass in its raw form is not an ideal fuel, its bulky and generally contains far too much water to burn efficiently. Therefore before we try to use biomass, we need to be able to process it. This means processing the material into pellet form with a pellet press. A pellet is a compressed form of the original raw material. Originally pellets we made from grass and other materials and used for animal feed. Many different biomass materials can be compressed into fuel pellets, such as wood, reed canary grass, miscanthus, hemp even cardboard. Under controlled conditions in a modern pellet stove or boiler these pellets can be used to generate heat with virtually no smoke produced. Please see the video below. Biomass renewable energy resources are plentiful, as we still regard much of it as waste. However we can manage biomass and food supplies together. For example when growing corn there is a lot of biomass waste generated from the corn stalks and waste cobs. Therefore one crop can produce both food and fuel, without the two competing. As biomass is already part of the carbon cycle, as long as we replace the biomass we use within its lifecycle, it is carbon neutral. Click below for our wood pellet press videos. |
