Why Are Torrefied Wood Pellets The Future Of Fuel Pellets? You may or may not be familiar with wood pellets or the wider range of biomass fuel pellets, however it is very unlike that you have heard much or anything about torrefied wood pellets. However over the next few years torrefied solid fuels made from wood and biomass will begin to take market share with the aim to take over the whole market. The reasons are simple, torrefied fuel pellets are superior to normal wood pellets in every aspect. Wood pellets are vast improvement over logs or other solid fuels. They have a low moisture content and they flow like a liquid, and work well in hoppers and screw feeders. A torrefied pellet has the same benefits with a few improvements. First torrefied wood pellets will have double the amount of energy per pellet. This is achieved through heating the wood to around 250 degrees. This basically removes all the aspects of the fuel which you do not want. What is left is a much more concentrated form of carbon. As a result the torrefied pellets have the same energy mass per volume of space to heating oil. If that was not enough, there are two other significant benefits. Now the pellets will not produce any smell during combustion, not matter what they are made. Not only that they are a completely smokeless fuel, even from start up. Finally these wood pellets will also not absorb water. The implications of this are huge, as it means transportation and storage costs can be dramatically reduced. Also wood pellets are currently commonly packed in plastic bags, which means they are not a very green option for packaging. A torrefied wood pellet on the other hand could be packaged in a basic paper bag without the concerns of water damaging the product. In terms of the wood pellet mill and the production process it is pretty much the same as before. The material will be torrefied before it reaches the pellet mill. An additional benefit is it will take much less energy to compress the pellet. So there you have it, the solid fuel of the future. |
