Setting Up A Wood Pellet Plant With The Right Machines

Making pellets can be done on small and large scale, and can be done with just a pellet mill.

However, for a more automated process a complete wood pellet plant is used. A complete wood pellet plant is comprised of several processes from size reduction, drying, pellet compression, pellet cooling and finally storage and packaging. However, not only wood can be processed in a pellet plant, but also a wide range of other biomass materials. Please see the video below of a wood pellet boiler burning a collection of biomass pellets. Before setting up a wood pellet plant, you do have to check several things. Firstly is your location suitable, do you have sufficient space and good access? Also, your power source needs to be sufficient. 3 phase power is required to be able to run wood pellet production equipment. If this is not available you will require an industrial generator which may make your running costs much higher. Once you have answered the questions on your location, you need to decide if you want to purchase brand new equipment, or go for second hand? Wood pellet production equipment is very expensive, however purchasing second hand equipment does bring its own risks. You may find it hard with some of the second hand equipment to get support on spare parts. Also, some of the second hand equipment may not be suitable for your needs as the pellet press may have been designed for processing animal feed and not wood. In most cases you will need a drying solution, such as a rotary dryer. To keep costs down and make the process as green as possible you should be using a biomass burner to provide the heat for drying.
