Wood Pellets Compared To Hemp Pellets From The Machine

To really be able to meet the future demands of the pellet fuel market we need to diversify the range of fuel pellets beyond just wood pellets.

There are small groups producing various different pellet fuels, however there is not really a significant push towards a wider range of biomass pellet fuels. There are many different energy crops which have gone through trials to see how well they compare to wood pellets and what sort of yields they can produce. To view examples of the range of biomass fuels that can be produced please watch the video below of our pellet boiler. One of the most promising crops which could be used to meet the void of supply from wood pellets are hemp pellets. Hemp is an amazing crop that can produce food, fibre and oil. It should not be confused with marijuana as these are two separate plants. Hemp grows from seed and can then be harvested in just 3 months time. The yields are also very impressive and in general higher than other energy crops such as miscanthus or switchgrass. When hemp is compressed into pellet form, they actually burn very similar to wood pellets. Hemp pellets produce low ash, they do not clinker and they are no more corrosive than wood pellets. If you compare this to say miscanthus, miscanthus pellets have an ash content roughly double that of wood pellets and they do tend to clinker. Miscanthus pellets are also more corrosive to your pellet stove or boiler. Therefore it is clear to see why hemp is such an important crop. However due to the concerns over cannabis farms claiming they are hemp farms legally growing hemp is difficult in many countries. Below you will find videos of our mini pellet machine and larger pellet presses making pellets. All our pellet mills are made in the UK.
