Wood Pellets Compared To Straw Pellets From The Press To make better use of the biomass resources we have, and not to be completely dependant on wood we need to produce fuels from a wide range of materials, such as grasses and straw. Straw as a waste from food crop production provides one source of biomass that can be used to produce fuel pellets to be used in stoves and boilers. In many countries the straw is still burnt in the field and is a massive waste of the energy it contains. Part of the reason this is done is to return some the nutrients from the straw back into the soil. However this straw could be made into fuel pellets, and the ash from the stoves and boilers is then returned to the soil. However burning straw pellets is not like burning wood pellets, for instance we have burnt over 20 tonnes of straw pellets in our Tatano pellet boiler. In terms of energy straw pellets have slightly less energy density than wood pellets. However straw pellets produce significantly more ash than wood pellets, therefore only certain wood pellet stoves and boilers can actually use straw pellets. Also the ash from the straw pellets melts at a lower temperature, this means glass like clinkers form. Again if your pellet stove or boiler is not up to the task this can generate some serious issues. Finally straw pellets are more corrosive, so you need a pellet burner to withstand the corrosion. It is possible to make wood pellets or straw pellets on a very small scale, even from your home. We provide information and support on a complete range of pellet mills and pellet plants, from the home to the factory. To learn more about making pellets please click the link below for the free beginners guide. You can also see videos of our small press in action. This mini pellet mill machine can process both wood and straw into high density fuel pellets for stoves and boilers. |
