Choosing Wood Pellets Equipment Such As The Pellet Mill

Due to the increase in the demand for wood pellets, there has also been an increase in the demand for wood pellets equipment such as hammer mills, dryers and wood pellet mills.

However, some of this equipment is not actually of a suitable quality for the production of wood pellets, as it was not designed to produce wood pellets but animal feed. Animal feed pellet mills may appear very similar to wood pellet mills, however there are several differences which are crucial. For instance the differences in the power and gearing mean that the pellet mill may not have the power required to compress wood into pellet form. As wood fibre has a much higher density than materials used for animal feed, more heat and power is required to compress wood through a pellet mill die. However, with the right equipment, it is possible to compress wood and wide range of other materials into pellet form. Initially you have to reduce the wood to small particles of around 6mm, this is generally done through a hammer mill. Once the wood has been reduced in size, the moisture percentage must be checked. If too much moisture is present, the wood needs to be dried before it is ready for the wood pellet mill. The two main types of pellet mill are the flat die and ring die. With flat dies generally used for small scale production and ring dies used for larger scale production.
