Wood Pellets From Sawdust Is Easier On The Pellet Mill Wood pellet fuels can be produced from a very wide range of resources. Various wood wastes can be collected and processed into pellet form. However the story of wood pellets been produced on an industrial scale started with using sawdust. In Sweden they have a huge forestry industry, and also a large timber processing industry. Through this industry there are huge volumes of wood waste in the form of sawdust. This sawdust is also very dry as it is produced from kiln dried wood. Therefore in terms of making wood pellets, this sawdust is ideal. It has a small consistent particle size and the moisture is very low. when producing pellets raw material size reduction and drying take up time and energy. Therefore having a raw material at hand that is already partly processed is ideal. The sawdust then goes through a pellet press, and the resulting wood pellets are regarded as premium pellets at the sawdust contains very little if any bark. This lack of bark means the pellets produce a very low ash content below 0.5%. However many other materials can be used to produce fuel pellets. Making pellets and operating an efficient pellet process is all about maintaining pellet quality and reducing energy input into the pellet plant. Pellet quality in the terms of moisture and density are very important to provide a fuel that will burn efficiently and also transport well without generating excessive fines. So when it comes to production costs, how can having sawdust in the first place save costs? Well before any material can be used in the pellet mill is must be reduced in size. If you are already starting with sawdust it means that a shredder will not be required. However it is recommended that the sawdust still be run through a hammer mill to ensure consistent particle size. Click below for press videos. |
